26 March 2026 – AI, what is it and how to use.

The following is a summary of the talk given by John Cameron at the March Monthly Meeting

ChatGPT and Modern AI

This presentation described how tools like ChatGPT have transformed artificial intelligence from science fiction into everyday reality. Since its public release in 2022 by OpenAI, ChatGPT has enabled people to have natural, human-like conversations with computers.

What AI Can Do

Modern AI systems act as powerful assistants. They can:

  • Write reports, resumes, and even computer programs
  • Generate images and creative content
  • Provide advice and hold detailed conversations
  • Go beyond traditional search engines by discussing ideas interactively

How It Works

AI is based on neural networks, inspired by the human brain, which learn patterns from large amounts of data.
A major breakthrough came in 2017 with Transformer technology, allowing AI to understand context across long pieces of text and predict the next word in a sentence with surprising accuracy.

ChatGPT – The GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer:

  • Generative: creates new content
  • Pre-trained: trained on vast datasets, including much of the Internet
  • Transformer: uses Transformer neural network technology

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths:

  • Natural conversation
  • Creativity and idea generation
  • Practical problem-solving

Weaknesses:

  • Lack of true understanding or ethics (relies on built-in “guardrails”)
  • Hallucinations – can confidently produce incorrect or fictional information
  • AI errors have already caused issues (e.g. inaccurate reports)

Best Practices for Users

There are a number of very similar AI systems you can try. ChatGPT was first, Google Gemini is now increasingly popular. The free versions are more than adequate for most of our purposes. You can access them from any web browser. On phones you can also instal an app. Best practices are:

  • Give clear, detailed instructions
  • Guide the AI on any refinements or changes you wish to make.
  • Treat AI as a tool, not a source of guaranteed truth
  • Verify important facts

Wider Impact in society

  • It will impact and change jobs, especially in office work, customer service, and journalism. It is another in a long chain of technology changes.
  • Copyright and originality concerns remain unclear
  • People may rely on AI for emotional support instead of humans
  • Education is adapting to AI use
  • Internet traffic is changing as AI answers replace website visits

Key Takeaway

Large language models like ChatGPT are powerful tools—but they require careful, informed use. How beneficial they are depends on how we choose to use them.
